When Cutting Your Toenails Requires Glasses (And Other Signs You’re Officially an Adult)

Let’s have a moment of honesty.

The day I needed to put on reading glasses to trim my toenails was the day I knew life had shifted gears. I stood there, foot in hand, squinting like a pirate trying to read a treasure map, thinking:

“This didn’t used to be this hard.”

And if you’re anything like me, you’re probably realizing that adulting snuck up on us.

One minute you’re dancing in the kitchen with a bag of chips, and the next minute you’re Googling things like “knee pain while sleeping” or “best ergonomic pillow for neck support”. 🤕

Welcome, my friend, to the season of functional adulthood.

We’re Not 18 Anymore… But Our Hearts Never Got the Memo

In our minds, we’re still youthful. We still remember our favorite songs from high school. We still get excited over pizza night and dream about taking over the world.

But life says otherwise:

  • Mortgage payments.

  • PTA meetings.

  • Job stress.

  • Kids who expect us to know everything.

  • Bodies that groan when we stand up too fast.

We’ve become the generation that keeps the economy afloat, raises the next generation, and is somehow still figuring out how to fold a fitted sheet.

And yet, deep down, we’re all asking the same question:

“Am I really ready for all this?”

Adulting: Batteries Not Included

Let’s face it: this life is not easy.

And even though we carry the title “grown-up,” most days we’re just winging it with a prayer and a strong cup of coffee.

The truth is, we were never meant to carry it all alone.

God knew adulthood (and life in general) would come with battles—physical, emotional, spiritual.

And just like we now need visual aids to cut toenails or read tiny labels, we need divine aid to navigate life.

God’s Toolkit for the Overwhelmed Adult

Here’s the good news: God didn’t leave us hanging.

✝️ 1. Jesus — The Ultimate Life Saver

God sent His Son, Jesus, to take our sin, our shame, and our struggle. He didn’t wait for us to get our act together. He came while we were still a hot mess.

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

— Romans 5:8 (NIV)

Because of Jesus, we don’t have to try and earn our way to peace, purpose, or salvation. We just have to say yes to Him.

🕊️ 2. The Holy Spirit — Our Everyday Guide

Think of the Holy Spirit as divine Google Maps—but better.

He doesn’t just show you the destination; He walks with you, whispers when to turn, and even gives you peace when you’re stuck in traffic (literal or emotional).

“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth…”

— John 16:13 (NIV)

The Holy Spirit gives wisdom, comfort, and direction. And if you’ve ever asked God, “Should I really take this job? Should I apologize first? Is this relationship healthy?”—that’s the Holy Spirit nudging your soul.

👼 3. Angels — Your Heavenly Backup

It’s not just you vs. the world. You’ve got backup.

“For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.”

— Psalm 91:11 (NIV)

God has dispatched heavenly agents to protect, defend, and minister to you. You might not see them, but you’ve got a spiritual security team.

And yes—even when you’re crying on the floor because your kid threw mashed potatoes in your shoe—they’re there.

But Here’s the Catch: Are We Tuning In?

All of this divine help is available, but the question is:

Are we paying attention?

Or are we trying to juggle everything on our own, stressed out, overwhelmed, and spiritually dehydrated—when God is offering us daily help, guidance, and refreshment?

Real Talk: Don’t Wait for a Crisis to Cry Out

We tend to treat prayer like a fire extinguisher:

“Break glass in case of emergency.”

But God is not just a rescue boat when the ship is sinking. He wants to be the captain of your daily cruise.

He wants to guide you in the small stuff:

  • Whether to say “yes” to that new commitment.

  • How to respond to your spouse during a tough moment.

  • What to say when your teen opens up to you.

  • How to forgive, how to rest, how to breathe.

Finally ~(Before You Forget Why You Walked into the Room)

Getting older might mean more glasses, more responsibility, and fewer cartilage options in your knees.

But it also comes with deeper wisdom, better perspective, and (hopefully) more faith.

So if you find yourself needing aids to do everyday things—let that be a gentle reminder that we need spiritual aids too.

Let’s not try to do life on our own.

Let’s lean on:

  • The cross that saves us.

  • The Spirit who guides us.

  • The God who never leaves us.

And maybe—just maybe—aging isn’t so bad when you know who’s got your back.

A Little Prayer for the Road:

Lord, thank You that You don’t expect me to do life on my own. Help me slow down, tune in, and trust You more each day. Give me eyes to see what You’re doing—even when I need glasses. Amen.
